How it works

Russian has a real, documented system for writing English names - practical transcription, the set of rules its newspapers, atlases and encyclopedias have refined for over a century. It works from sound, not letters: we look your name up in a pronunciation dictionary of over 120,000 English words, then rebuild that pronunciation in Cyrillic following those rules - including their spelling-aware touches, like keeping the doubled letters of Emma and Jessica.

If your name is too new or too rare for the dictionary, we sound it out from the spelling first and tell you so under the result.

An honest word: even a standardized system leaves room for tradition - the same name can appear in Russian print two ways (old books say Гарри where modern press says Хэрри). That is why every rendering here carries the approximate mark, and why names we have verified against real Russian usage show their everyday spelling instead.
